Earned titles:
"Tinman", "Strongman", "Ironman", "Ultraman", "Marathonman", "Horseman", "Snowman", "Mountainman", and "Waterman"… etc.
Background:
Cowman was born in Salinas, California; March 16th, 1944. He was raised on a ranch, which also was farmed. He had a small lake in front of his house where he learned how to boat, fish, and swim. He rode horses from the age of five and still rides today. He started riding a mile, and then working his way up to 100 mile endurance races- later on in his athletic career. (In the latter 70’s, 80’, and 90’s.) He was one of six boys’. He had a healthy up bringing with plenty of home grown - healthy organic foods, and plenty of exercise, and a lot of love from his parents.
The following are some of Cowman’s major sporting accomplishments:
SWIM / BIKE / RUN- TRIATHLONS:
ULTRAMAN TRIATHLON: a three-day stage race including a 6-mile swim, 90 mile bike ride- first day. A 170 mile bike ride- the second day. And a 52.4 mile run the third day- encompassing a complete trip around the Island of Hawaii. Cowman is the only athlete in the world who has entered and finished this ultra test of endurance every year since it’s start. (now 15 years of ULTRAMAN).
IRONMAN TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: this event is held on the Kona Coast of the Big Island, Hawaii. This race covers three events- first a 2.4 mile swim, secondly- a 112 mile bike ride, and third- a 26.2 mile (marathon) run. Cowman has completed all races to date- except the first annual. Cowman has the most finishes of the World Championship Ironman in Kona-Hawaii…To date- Cowman has 21 finishes, most of anyone in the world… (Oct. 1999 will be his 22 finish in Hawaii World-Championships.)
IRON-MAUI TRIATHLON: this is an Ironman distance race. (I think this Ironman distance race in Maui-Hawaii is much more difficult than the Ironman - race on the Big Island of Hawaii.) Cowman has participated in all of the Iron-Maui Triathlons. Five triathlons have taken place to date. Cowman has the most finishes to date.
IRONMAN CANADA: is an Ironman distance race held in the quaint town of Penticton, British Columbia. Cowman has finished this triathlon four times to date. Cowman is entered in August 1999 race. (this race has 1,800 athletes entered.
IRONMAN NEW ZEALAND: this triathlon is also Ironman distance race- held in March of each year. For the first annual race- Cowman was invited as a sports personality. This first annual triathlon was the only Ironman race that Cowman finished ahead of "THE MAN", Dave Scott…. (Dave did not finish this race!) Cowman started doing the Ironman Triathlon before Dave Scott; now Dave is retired from Ironman races, but Cowman- continues…
STRONGMAN TRIATHLON: this race is held in the southern part of Japan. This race is close to the Ironman distance races. Cowman is a three-time finisher in this event. (Cowman was an invited guest all three years.) The first year Cowman entered this race- he wore his buffalo headgear in all three parts of the race. He created quite a stir. The athletes all thought the event was difficult enough without making it even more difficult. (Cowman did it- Cowman Style!)…..A-Moo-Ha!
COWMAN has finished many, many shorter distances triathlon races: such as- the Keauhou Kona Triathlon (1/2 Ironman distance). Another popular race is the "Tinman Triathlon" held in Honolulu, Oahu-Hawaii.
IRONMAN BRASIL: this race is of standard Ironman distance. This race is the only qualifier in South America…For Hawaii World Championships help each year in October. Cowman has been invited to the race for the first, second, and third annual events… 98, 99, and year 2,000. Cowman- is invited to go to the local schools to share his experiences. There is always a big response to Cowman’s presents.
ULTRA ENDURANCE RUNS:
WESTERN STATES 100 MILE ONE DAY RUN: beginning at Squaw Valley, California. The endurance run is ran over the western state’s trail- from Squaw- Valley to the small town of Auburn, California. The trail travel’s over the Sierra mountains, a very difficult course to follow by horse or man/woman. The small town of Auburn was a very popular mining town years ago…A lot of history still lies in the surrounding area.
COWMAN- In the year of 1976- was the second person to ever run what became known as the 100 mile "WESTERN STATES ENDURANCE RUN.’’ The first time Cowman ran this western states trail, he ran with the horses of the famed "Tevis Cup Endurance Horse Race," also from Squaw Valley to Auburn- town. COWMAN- wanted to demonstrate that the difficulty of this trail was humanly possible to complete in one day like the horses have proved through out the past years. (A test of extreme endurance of both animal and human)…(endurance runners, a rare breed!) Each year, Cowman has #00 for each year of the Western States Endurance Run- because he was the second runner to ever finish this run. Dr. Gordon Ainsleigh was the first runner to ever cover the 100 mile trail in one day. Ainsleigh first ran the 100 mile trail with the Tevis Cup horse race- he had a #0 on his tee shirt. (Gordy has #0 and Cowman has #00)…Forever! To date - Cowman has finished the Western States Endurance Run - fourteen times….(1999 race, Gordy finished his fifteenth .)
THE AMERICAN RIVER 50 MILLER: this race travel’s from near Sacramento, California to the town of Auburn, California. Cowman has finished this race one time with his buffalo horns on head.
LAKE SAROMA 100 KM ENDURANCE RUN: (62 miles) in Hokido, Japan….(this race in held in northern Japan- a very beautiful area.) Cowman has been invited to this event two times and finished with his traditional buffalo head dress…
HONOLULU CITY LIGHTS: is a 50 mile endurance run on pavement in the city of Honolulu, Oahu- Hawaii. This race is a qualifier for the Western States Endurance Run- Lake Tahoe to Auburn, California.
MOLOKAI, HAWAII 100 KM: this is a very difficult endurance run- because of hills, heat, wind, and distance. (this 100 KM- 62 mile) can also be used for a qualifier for the W.S.R. in California.
RUN TO THE SUN: this endurance run is held on the island of Maui, Hawaii. This run travel’s from sea level to the top of Mt. Haleakala, which is at 10,035 ft. elevation… distance is 37.2 miles… (this endurance run is very difficult because of the altitude, and the steepness of the run course…"This challenging course, is said to be the steepest paved road on earth, this race is not for the novice marathoner. You should be rigorously prepared to meet the challenge. Cowman was the first runner to run from the summit of Haleakala, to the ocean, back to the summit, and then finish at the ocean. (this was a three way run of a total of 114 miles in a little more than a day.) Cowman- first ran the "Run To The Sun" race course, which was 37.5 miles from sea level to the summit. Cowman felt so good when he got to the summit that he returned by foot to the race starting area.
Again- Cowman felt so good after running two ways at 37.2 each way that a month later he decided to try a three-way adventure… This was another way for Cowman to test his endurance and test his running ability. Cowman- decided if he was going to spend all this energy towards something positive- then he would run for a fundraiser. Cowman ended up running and raising money for a center for Independent Living (these were deaf and blind people from island of Maui.)These people helped crew for Cowman for a full day- 24hrs. plus…Also the run was broadcast on the local radio station to help raise money from run- for the center. It all was a very big success- for all concerned.
COWMAN’S MAJOR MARATHONS, 26.2 mile’s
BOSTON MARATHON: This very famous marathon is held in the state of Massachusetts. The Worlds Best marathon runners show up for this infamous race held on Patriots Day in Boston- race starts at high noon on a Monday…Race starts in the community of Hopkinton, Ma. and ends up downtown Boston. (Race finishes nean famous- Taveron On The Green.
(I have finished this special race- app. 15 times …)
NEW YORK MARATHON: this marathon is one of the great one’s… this race travels through the five boroughs of New York City, N.Y. This largely attended marathon draws many international runners. (many runners in this race are -World Class)… Cowman- has app. six finishes in New York Marathon.
HONOLULU MARATHON: This marathon is held in Honolulu, Oahu-Hawaii every December. Runners come from all over the world to run this special race held in a tropical atmosphere. Many runners come to run and take a vacation at the same time. Cowman has run the last 21 years straight- and has finished well in all of his attempts. Cowman used to do well in the Clydesdale Division- 200 lbs. Plus. The race organization took away the division because there were not enough heavyweight runners- men or women…(now Cowman must join the middleweights who are normally a faster group- it stands to reason because of size and weight differences).
VOLCANO MARATHON: This is a very beautiful and a very difficult marathon all in one. This marathon is held at Volcanoes National Park- on the Big Island of Hawaii. The first year of this very unique race, Cowman had a very exceptional run. Cowman ended up coming in second place over-all with a time of 3hrs.10min. Only 10 min. behind the fastest runner in the State of Hawaii at this time. 1999 race will be my 17th. Finish. This marathon is held each July. There are only two runners who have run every Volcano Marathon from the start- and Cowman A-Moo-Ha is one of those runners. Cowman is very consistent over the years.
MAUI MARATHON: this is a very scenic marathon- on a fairly flat course…The Marathon is held in March- this is the season when the whales are giving birth and are in the area. The motto for the race is "Running With the Whales." (Cowman has finished this marathon app. 13 times.) For the last four years- Cowman has been invited to Maui’s Marathon as a guest and invited runner-covering his expenses.
KONA MARATHON: This race is held in the month of June. Most of this marathon is run on the Ironman Triathlon Marathon run course. This course is mostly flat and hot. (This Marathon is small in numbers- but the runners and sponsors are very friendly and show a lot of Aloha- Kona Style!) Cowman has run the marathon 2 times.
OAKLAND MARATHON: held in the Oakland City Water Front…California. Cowman- only ran this marathon once.
AVENUE OF THE GIANTS MARATHON: this beautiful and scenic marathon was run in the RedWoods of Northern California. Cowman was so very much inspired by this very special location that he ran a 2hr. 48min. marathon. At the time Cowman’s weight was app. 2l6 lbs. (for a person to weigh that much and for that running time- might have been close to world class.) Today that time is excellent for any big person. (Cowman, 20 years later - still weighs app. 216 lbs. And still can run at good clip when necessary.
Cowman has learned how to pace himself in every event he participates in. Some races Cowman enters- He goes out to win and others he goes for the finish.
SILVER STATE MARATHON: this marathon is held near Reno, Nevada… When Cowman lived in North Lake Tahoe, he would drive down the Mountain to the Silver State Marathon. Cowman would always run well at lower elevations… The Marathon had a HeavyWeight Division-, which Cowman always won if he showed up… (After- Cowman- winning the Heavyweight Division app. 3 or 4 times- the race people stopped having the Division)?
WILD, WILD WEST CROSS-COUNTRY MARATHON: this marathon was held in the high desert- near Lone Pine, California. The first Marathon was held in 1978. Cowman’s first attempt at this Marathon was a success. Cowman ended up winning this first marathon race- and he did it wearing his buffalo horns. His horns weight app. 8 pounds…But it was a wild race! (Cowman- ended up by chance having #178… The one was for first place and seventy-eight was the year… Think about it? (Cowman- worked with the race organizers to put on the first marathon. It was Cowman’s idea to call the marathon- "The Wild, Wild West Cross- Country Marathon. The race was held in a area which was part of the wild west, and Holly-Wood filmed a lot of movies in this area because of the scenery. There were rattle-snakes, long-horned cattle wondering around freely, and a lot of other wild life in the area.
Because of Cowman’s image, his traditional buffalo head-piece- this wild nature area- this all fit his "SPECIAL DAY UNDER THE SUN," A-MOO-HA!)
HORSE RACES (WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS)
INTERNATIONAL- RIDE & TIE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: the world championships are held mainly on West Coast of the United States. The first ride & ties were held in northern California… Bud Johns who worked for Levi Jean Company in San Francisco- came up with the ideas. This year- 99’ will be Bud’s 70th birthday…(Thanks to you Bud John’s for starting the sport of Ride & Tie…) Cowman, through the years has finished app. 15 times (fifteen years.) also there have been times when Cowman’s horse for app.five different races did not finish for different reasons… If the horse for any reason in the Vet’s eyes was lame or for any other reason for the horses safety or health would pull the horse. I have never seen a runner pulled by a veteran - but it is possible…Cowman’s best finishes are a 3rd.place, a 4th. Place, and a 5th. Place. All these places - in the top ten - were in the money! There were several books written about the Ride & Tie. Some said the Ride & Tie was a combination of the Boston Marathon and Kentucky Derby…(That Would Be One Wild Race!)
THE TEVIS CUP- ENDURANCE HORSE RACE: this endurance horse race starts near Truckee, California. This race is held each August closet the full moon. The Tevis Ride used to start in Squaw Valley, California (or called- Olympic Valley- where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held.) The Ride starts near Truckee, Ca. Lake Tahoe Area. The race goes through Squaw Valley, goes up the ski hill and over Emigrant Pass and travels west towards the finish line near Auburn, California. The trail that all the riders travel on is called the Western States Trail. The Tevis Cup Trail is app. 100 miles in length and it is a very difficult trail with extremely steep terrain… The trail, the race tests the best of riders and the best of horses. Excellent horseman and horsewomanship is necessary! Cowman has finished this Tevis Cup Endurance Horse Race two times…(the third time I tried the race- I missed the cut off time at Robertson Flat- app. 30+ miles into the ride. I took too good of care of my horse and I got trapped behind slower riders…I now have learned my lesson!) I would like to ride the Tevis Cup Endurance Race - one more time… maybe yr. 2,000 ?

THE SPORT SPECIALTY I’VE CHOSEN IS ENDURANCE RACES OR EVENTS. I try to do what ever it takes to achieve my best performance. This includes: eat well, train well, think well, sleep well, perform well, and let God take care of all the rest. What’s important to me is to learn from the past and present experiences and then to pass that knowledge on to younger generations. Our youth is our future.
