CD ROM Mastering
Ever falling prices and improvements in CD ROM technology has
made it possible to transfer data to CDs on a custom basis as
will as duplicate both data and audio CDs. We will soon be
offering a service to place complete program backup on CD. This
will allow purging of transactions and patients from the live
system while retaining the ability to refer to the CD copy for
historical information. Other advantages of CD archiving is the
read only nature of the disk preventing erasure or change, and
the long life of the CD ROM media (life expectancy is measured in
decades).
CD ROM is the ideal storage media for patient records and
transcriptions for several reasons:
Once written the data cannot be changed or erased.
Each CD holds a lot of data - up to 650 megabytes.
When mounted on a network CD ROM player the data can
be retrieved with the same speed and ease as any data on
the network.
The CD has a long life expectancy - estimated at up
to 100 years.
Multiple disks may be used either manually or via
multiple disc players available today.
Professional CD Labels make identification easy.

On the lighter side I have been playing with audio CD
recording. As an extension of creating cassette tapes from my
favorite albums to make a custom tape I am now making CDs from
the original CD picking the artists and cuts I like. I hope to
soon be able to add analog input from vinyl albums as well
allowing both CD and Records to be used as source. All in all,
look for more CD ROM related services to be available soon.
